Transforming learning

Online learning is not as advanced as experts think. LMS (Moodle, Canvas, D2L) files are small, learning is broken up into smaller pieces leaving learners with too many options, taking too long and too many-clicks to get through.

YouTube distracts with a torrent of unrelated videos/adverts, newer platforms (Blackboard, Kaltura) offer more elements of learning but with many moving parts/3rd parties needing sorting and glitching with too many learners.

There has been a profound transformation in finding and using information. In seconds you can find any moment of any movie/TV show on new super-sized streaming platforms (OTT’s or over-the-top network) like Netflix or Disney Plus.

OTT's handle files of any size, so information doesn't need to be broken into so many small pieces or take so long to find: scattered jelly beans are sorted into jars, making it easy to deliver, find and then use any information and thus:

 ...a profound moment for learning as well.

ADVANTAGES

- LMS' small file sizes take too long to navigate

- OTT's uploads large, not small file sizes

- Easier to organise and sort information

- Handles any amount of use, no glitches

- Information found in seconds

- Learners can use any information

- Using information is critical for learning

- Learning content become revenue assets

I'm sorry for wasting your time and asking such basic questions, it's just we're drowning in information, instructions and ways to get the learning.

Streaming-learning platforms: active learning

ADVANTAGES

- Industries need problem-solvers not robots

- Learning resources set up giving information

- Giving information leads to docile robots

- Learners need practice or using information

- Using information needs safety-nets

- Our platforms are learning safety-nets

- Learners can check, clarify, confirm etc...

- YourTube learning: from docile to active

The most progressive human scientists showed education is based on giving

specific knowledge in specific ways, times and places.

Learners then get good at being told what to think and do, afraid of getting things wrong, looking foolish and doing what they need to survive—listen, sop up, repeat like robots.

Forward-thinking universities train professors in “active-learning” strategies, or

what we call “using” knowledge so learners can safely make the mistakes they need BUT their resources are set up giving knowledge: hence those "finding-knowledge" problems we mentioned above.

SQRLZ (progressive technology) and Broaderthinking's (progressive learning theory) OTT learning platforms allows learners to easily:

   ..find and therefore move between any information;

   ..check, clarify and confirm or ask, explore and wonder;

   ..problem-solve, overcome ambiguity, deepen understanding;

   ..connect to other knowledge and to the learners’ contexts;

   ..or find instant answers of whatever their problem is.

Not scattered jelly beans but shelves of clearly labelled jars; or vertically categorized videos bolstered by documents, flexible learning resources, embedded social media, live streaming and built-in e-commerce.

THE DAYS OF IT TAKING AGES TO FIND THE INFORMATION YOU TRUST... ARE OVER!

I hate it.. [LMS, it takes] forever to find what you need, this folder, that tab, these tools, that module, this shell, there's so many options,I don't have that much time to go through them, the videos don't load, the teachers do different things, the group meeting are unreliable... seriously!

Industry's dilemma

Employers agree: they need creative problem-solvers able to flexibly adapt to everyday real-life’s increasingly gritty, complex and ambiguous realities. Which is a problem when graduates come from institutions relying on the giving specific knowledge in specific ways, times and places.

We get good at what we do, and so these graduates have become very good at being told what to think and do, afraid of getting things wrong, looking foolish and doing what they need, just to survive—listen, sop up, repeat like robots.

Worse, science is so precise that the knowledge driving education and learning is delivered in silos, the internet scatters more and more unfiltered opinions and information like millions of jelly beans across an ice rink, and as described, online learning is not as effective as learning designers might think.

Already docile learners, or employees, are then too easily confused and paralyzed by so many information fragments, unsure what to trust and can’t find what they need, or at least it takes too long to find what they need …hence millions of mistakes and lost dollars!!

In the same ways that many established businesses file for bankruptcy because they can’t adjust to this changing delivery of information, not streaming learning is going to leave many learning institutions behind.

For learning institutions need to show how their learning produces the problem solving graduates industry needs, while industries' learning has to have a safety net where every possible element of learning is in one easy to see, find and use place: YourTube not YouTube.
